    Buildability and fit are very important for beginner's kits. You don't want something with warped parts, lots of flash, surface irregularities, badly mating surfaces, or thick sprue gates. Nor do you want something with a huge part count. You want something with parts you can cut off the sprues easily and glue together with a minimum of fuss. And lastly, a beginner should start small and master the arts of assembly and finish. For this reason, I would suggest newer 1/72 aircraft or armour kits as better options for the beginner. Obviously, you also have to consider subject preference as well--some people prefer cars, ships, spaceships or even dinosaurs to planes and armour. Airfix, Revell and Hasegawa kits are all good choices apart from Tamiya, particularly their more modern offerings. They are usually cheaper than Tamiya kits and of comparable quality. As a further suggestion for tools, sanding sticks are a must to clean up parts and deal with seams.

    David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Wednesday, 17 July, 2024) Thank you for a look ahead. The Curtiss P-40B Warhawk USAAF Fighter certainly has its place in history, so it is befitting to have a detailed, quality kit represent those who flew the actual warbird. You mention the P-40N, wondering as to its likelihood of seeing a kit of one. If I recall correctly, this was the variant that the War Department belatedly had augmented with a turbo-supercharger, enabling it to ascend beyond 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) in altitude to engage the enemy on an even footing (the same injustice that had befallen the Bell P-39 Airacobra USAAF Fighter). I just saw from ModelFun channel this reference: “P-40 N Warhawk 1:32 FULL BUILD Burma Banshee Trumpeter 02212”. By now, you likely have seen this kit, as well as the Great Wall Hobbies 1:32nd-scale replica of the Curtiss P-40B Warhawk USAAF Fighter, famous as the aircraft of the “Flying Tigers” (the 1st American Volunteer Group [AVG] of the Republic of China Air Force) of Gen. Claire L. Chennault, Col. Robert L. Scott (who documented his experiences in God Is My Co-pilot [New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, Publisher, 1943; Gen. Chennault wrote the foreword]), Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, later renowned for USMC fighter squadron VMF-214 (“Black Sheep”) flying Chance Vought F4U-1 Corsair USMC Fighters, amongst numerous others. It would not surprise me if you had built both. If so, please let ud know how things went. I also would like to learn how the two kits compare and contrast. Since they essentially are the same aircraft, I would expect their overall shape to closely match. I infer from your accent that you are a shopkeeper Down Undah (as I hear you lot phrase it). As one who long has lacked the means for travel (especially anything extensive), I like to ask folk I encounter in person or online how things are in your area? From all I have seen on the televised news and discussion programmes, given your country’s position of prominence in the region, China’s ruler has kept rather busy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese (Australian Labor Party) and the executive government (if I understand correctly all that).

  • @DansModelBench
    @DansModelBench 12 дней назад

    The concept of all this paper panzers and planes etc leaves me cold. I'm guessing I'm not alone given the sudden drop in prices. The kits don't look that bad, so maybe the company needs to pivot to real subjects for at least part of their range. If they could offer the same quality and price on real prototype subjects, they could do well.

      Hi Rob, We are happy to see if we can help you fix this :) Might be best to send us an email (support@metrohobbies.com.au) with a picture, it sounds as the clamp might be off the collar, they should be pre-attached and might just need screwdriver to tighten it. Tamiya have one other range of paints, specifically aimed at their RC range of vehicles, those being specifically for Polycarbonate. What type of paints are those? I think they're usually only in a spray can, as they're aimed at RC vehicles they might be more hard wearing?

    • @warwicksworkshop9511
      @warwicksworkshop9511 Месяц назад

      They don't say what type they are but I suspect lacquer. You can add a plasticiser to any paint, theoretically, to make it more flexible. I've used SMS 'Flex' with all the brands of lacquer paint brands with great success, both on PC and ABS.

    • @MetroHobbiesAus
      @MetroHobbiesAus Месяц назад

      Hi Peter, Tamiya PS paints are a synthetic lacquer that is formulated to bond to polycarbonate and remains flexible once dry. They are not necessarily harder wearing, I've found they are actually a bit softer when fully dried. They are normally painted on the inside of a clear RC body (so it doesn't scratch off)

    • @peterbrown3608
      @peterbrown3608 Месяц назад

      @@MetroHobbiesAus Way back in the late 70's I built a couple of RC cars, Wild Willy's, I forget what the other one was called. Back then the bodies were just like normal plastic model kit bodies; I have the Fiat Abarth 1000 waiting to be built which has the clear polycarbonate body. Things have changed a lot.

I remember from 50 years ago when my father introduced me into plastic modelling, we only had Humbrol Enamel - and I did not know of anything else for decades after that. And when I used an airbrush for my first time (doing all my work with real brushes), I only found that this did not work the way I was used to ... but there was no one to explain to me why not.

    • @warwicksworkshop9511
      @warwicksworkshop9511 Месяц назад

      Max said that the carrier in Tamiya paints is water soluble, which is correct. Semantics at this juncture though, really. Pro Tip: You can thin Tamiya acrylics with lacquer thinners and they behave just like a lacquer.

      @Luke-en2tk Месяц назад

      @@warwicksworkshop9511 yeah I'm sure he knows his stuff it just sounded a little misleading as some of the others are water based. Yep I already stock the Tamiya lacquer thinners for the acrylics, it slows the drying period

      @user-ly4ko3sf3s Месяц назад

    I realize that this is 3 years old or so, but I have to comment on what was said about tamiya's tracks. Some of the rubber tracks are glue together, like he said. However, some are supposed to be melted together with a hot screwdriver or something similar. If it is a child beginner building the kits, they would need adult supervision for that part.

    I noticed that you started over with a fresh nub when you introduced a new tool. I always thought you were supposed to cut with the side cutters and get as close as possible then shave off a little with the hobby knife then finish with some light sanding? Am I doing it wrong? Should I be just picking one of those tools for nub removal?

    Jumping may be “basics” to you but I just wanted to see how the steering works with the wheel on the side of the controller. As someone thinking about getting into the hobby, I’m puzzled why the steering wheel is on the side and not straight on.

    • @MetroHobbiesAus
      @MetroHobbiesAus Месяц назад

      Thanks for your feedback! To answer your question, the wheel is on the side because it's ergonomically more comfortable to use the transmitter in your left hand, right index on the trigger, facing forward and turning the wheel left and right with your right hand, your thumb and forefinger. It allows you to comfortably walk, watch and drive your car, and pivot to follow the car. Its not like sitting in the car driving with your feet and hands, you need both hands active to drive the car, as well as hold the transmitter. We'll get our RC Department onto creating a new Steering Basics video ASAP to show this plus everything else you may want to know about steering and RC when you're first getting into the hobby 😄

    Do you recommend the 1/350 miniceaft from 2017 parts version? Or go withis larger ones or the newer smaller ones?

      The minecraft kit is fantastic! a great option. It really comes down to what you are looking for, the Trumpeter 1/200 scale gives you the WOW factor being so large with all the lights and etch metal parts we well :)

      @@MetroHobbiesAus I'm new to modeling, and I have some Tamiya and hasegawa 1/350 WW2 ships (all in boxes haha), so that was why I was curious about the 1/350. But I never heard of minicraft so was curious if they were good or if I should invest in a different size for better experience.
